Sickle cell is part of the story, not the whole story. ✨
People living with SCD are students, parents, professionals, creators, and leaders. Their lives are shaped by challenges, yes, but also by strength, resilience, and purpose.
When we share these stories in full, we change how the world sees sickle cell.

A glass of water sounds small. For a child with sickle cell disease, it can be one of the most protective habits in their day. 💧
Staying hydrated helps blood flow better and may help lower the risk of painful episodes. And kids dehydrate faster than we think, especially in hot weather, during illness, on busy days full of sports and school.
Offer water often, don't wait for thirst. Keep a bottle nearby at school, home, and on the go. Watch closely on hot days. Push fluids extra hard during illness, travel, and after activity.
Watch for dry lips, low energy, dark urine, or dizziness. Small daily habits, big difference.
Tag a parent, caregiver, or advocate who needs this reminder. 💙

A baby with sickle cell disease can look completely healthy at birth. 👶🏽
In many cases, warning signs don't appear until months later, which is why newborn screening is so important. It gives families time to prepare, learn, and act before a crisis ever happens.
Early knowledge is early protection.

Damon’s journey continues.
He has completed chemotherapy, received his cells back, and is now in the recovery and monitoring stage.

This part of the process takes strength, patience, medical support, and community. Damon has faced difficult moments, but he continues to move forward with courage and hope.

We are standing with him every step of the way.

When a child has sickle cell disease, their body may not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry the oxygen they need. That's anemia, and the signs aren't always loud.
Tiredness. Pale skin or lips. Low energy. A faster heartbeat. More sleep than usual. Less play than usual. Just not seeming like themselves.
You know your child best. If something feels off, especially if they suddenly look much more tired, pale, weak, or unwell, call the care team right away. Don't wait it out.
Save this. Share it. Tag a caregiver who needs to see it. 💛

Living with sickle cell is a daily practice. 🌿
Hydration. Rest. Regular checkups. The "small" things aren't small at all. They're the habits that help warriors manage their health and keep moving forward.
With the right care and support, many people with sickle cell disease are doing exactly that every single day.

At the Caregiver & Warrior Empowerment Event, Congressman Wesley Bell joined the Sickle Cell Association community to stand with warriors, caregivers, and families impacted by sickle cell disease.

Moments like this matter. Awareness grows stronger when leaders listen, show up, and stand beside the people living this journey every day.

We are grateful for every voice helping shine a light on sickle cell disease.
