Real change—the kind that brings peace, clarity, purpose—isn’t something you can buy in a retreat package. It doesn’t come with a room upgrade or a new moon ritual. Real change is slow. Messy. Sometimes excruciating. And it is earned.
You have to labor for it. You have to meet your resistance. You have to practice showing up when it’s boring, when it’s hard, when it’s inconvenient. You have to change the way you see the world—and then work even harder to let your old way of seeing die.
That doesn’t happen in a weekend. That doesn’t happen because someone sold you “transformation” wrapped in a turmeric latte.
A retreat is a ritual. One beautiful, intentional moment in a long, winding process of becoming. It’s a container to practice presence. To stretch into new ways of being. To see what it feels like to be less guarded, more open. And then to go back home and figure out what pieces of that experience you want to practice integrating. That is the beginning—not the end.
You don’t need to be changed.
You need to be met.
You need to be respected.
You need time, support, and space to remember who you are.
So no, a retreat won’t change your life.
But it might offer you one real moment of clarity.
One deep exhale.
One brave choice to do things differently.

For some time now I’ve lightheartedly referred to two yogas in this modern world; yoga - which appears in magazines and beer festivals and Big Y Yoga which sleeps quietly in the heart of anyone who ever thought they might be more than what they seem.
One of the ways my Foundational Training aims at Big Y Yoga is the language map I teach. Its primary intention is to help you, the teacher, stay lovingly out of the student’s inner experience—intellectually, energetically, and emotionally. This respectful distance is one reason Yoga is trauma-informed.
Now, I understand that “distance” might sound like separation, especially when we’re aiming to create collaborative, heartfelt spaces. But in this context, distance is sacred. It’s the space where a student’s intuition, agency, and personal truth can rise up and speak clearly. We’re not stepping away—we’re stepping aside, to let something more intimate and lasting unfold.
Yoga, after all, is a practice of self-revelation. It’s a way of learning your own mind so deeply that you begin to sense the difference between truth and illusion, love and attachment, joy and urgency, grief and despair, stillness and shutdown. Ultimately, it teaches us to distinguish ego from essence.
Yoga offers many tools to support this process—among them, asana, or the physical postures. The body, with all its wisdom, sensations, and subtle whispers, is one of our greatest teachers.
It may seem at times that yoga is about nailing that Warrior II, releasing stress, or building strength—and it is! But beneath it all, yoga is always quietly rooting for your freedom. It’s always asking: Who are you, really? And answering, again and again: You are eternal. You are joy. You are free.
As a teacher of Big Y Yoga, your job is not to fill the room with your insight—but to open the space for your students to discover theirs. You become a clear channel, a guide who gently turns students back toward the brilliance within themselves.
And so, we learn to speak in a way that is kind, clear, and quietly powerful. Words become spells—not to control or convince, but to invite, awaken, and affirm.

Friends, I'm thrilled to share with you a great opportunity to experience the historic Shaw Neighborhood in South City. Last fall, I embarked on a new project, purchasing a multifamily in this iconic area and have been tirelessly rehabbing it over the winter. Now, it's finally ready to brighten someone's day!
