Yesterday was International Day of Yoga, a reminder that taking time to relax and recharge can support both physical and mental well-being. Whether it's yoga, mindfulness, or simply watching the birds, self-care can be especially important for people managing long-term symptoms after COVID.

β€œThe truth is, no one of us can be free until everybody is free.” β€” Maya Angelou

Freedom is never experienced alone. It grows when barriers fall, opportunities expand, and communities rise together. St. Louis-born Maya Angelou captured that truth in her words, echoing the call of civil rights leaders like Fannie Lou Hamer, who reminded us that β€œNobody's free until everybody's free,” and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who taught that β€œinjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. It is a time to honor freedom, reflect on our nation's history, and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and cultural heritage of Black communities.

Across the St. Louis region, communities are gathering to commemorate the day through festivals, performances, educational programs, and cultural celebrations. ✨ In case you missed it…

A few weeks ago, KSDK 5 On Your Side spotlighted the incredible work our Community Health Workers Kelvin Melton and Candace Henderson are doing through IHN's Tornado Recovery Initiative β€” and the response was overwhelming.

Every day, they're on the ground connecting tornado survivors with medical care, utility assistance, medications, and other essential resources. As one resident put it, their support felt like "angels being sent" during an incredibly difficult time.

If you or someone you know still needs help with tornado recovery, don't hesitate to reach out:

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, it is a time to honor freedom, reflect on our nation's history, and celebrate the resilience and contributions of Black communities.

Across the St. Louis region, organizations, cultural institutions, and communities are hosting events that commemorate Juneteenth through music, art, education, performances, and community gatherings.
