📚 LITERACY IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN READING AND WRITING!

One of my goals as an educator is to expand students’ understanding of what it means to be literate in the real world.

We explore 📱 digital literacy, 💰 financial literacy, 🌎 cultural literacy, 🎵 musical literacy, 📺 media literacy, and, of course, traditional reading and writing literacy.

💰 One area I focus on intensely is FINANCIAL LITERACY—because understanding how to protect yourself, your family, your income, and what you’re building is part of navigating life.

And it’s that time of year! 🍂 I’m engaging with families who want to learn more about:

❤️ Life Insurance
🏠 Home Insurance
🚗 Auto Insurance
⚖️ Legal Benefits
🛡️ Identity Theft Protection
🏡 In-Home Security Networks
💼 Independent Business & Income Opportunities

Education doesn’t stop at the classroom door. I teach it. I live it. And I help families put it into practice.

🚨📚 COMING UP! 📚🚨

🏙️❤️ FROM STL TO GA 🍑💙💛

Now THIS is the kind of learning I’m talking about! 🙌🏾

My First-Year Composition students at Georgia Southern University are taking reading beyond the page and into real-world conversations with living authors. 📖➡️🔎➡️🎙️

Right now, my ENGL 1101 students are reading The Last Children of Mill Creek by St. Louis author Vivian Gibson—a story rooted in the people, memories, and history of Mill Creek Valley. 🏙️❤️📚

But we’re not just reading it. 👀

While they read, students are paying attention to what makes them curious. They’re investigating the people, places, history, experiences, and ideas they encounter, asking questions, making connections, and digging deeper. 🔎💭

And then comes the part I LOVE…

🎙️ THEY GET TO TALK TO THE AUTHOR!

On October 12 & 13, my Georgia Southern students will sit down with Vivian Gibson for student-led podcast interviews and bring their questions, discoveries, and interpretations directly into conversation with the woman who wrote the book. 🎧💬📚

This is what happens when reading becomes inquiry—and inquiry becomes a real-world experience. 🌎✨

📖 READ IT.
🔎 INVESTIGATE IT.
❓ QUESTION IT.
🎙️ TALK TO THE AUTHOR.

🏙️❤️ St. Louis stories.
🍑💙💛 Georgia Southern students.
🎙️ Real-world conversations.

First-Year Composition beyond the text. ✨

This is what learning looks like! 🙌🏾

My students are really getting into our Syllabus Scavenger Hunt—but they’re learning so much more than what’s written in the syllabus.

We’re practicing MLA formatting, navigating shared digital spaces, locating and evaluating information, following digital directions, and responsible file management all at the same time. Writing skills + digital literacy + problem-solving in one learning experience.

And the best part? They’re engaged. They’re talking. They’re searching. They’re figuring things out together. 💻📚

I love creating learning experiences where the skills aren’t taught in isolation—they’re practiced while students are actually doing something.

🎙️ **IT’S PODCAST MONDAY!** 🎉

Today, we close out Season One of EDUCATΞUS with a conversation that brings everything we’ve explored this season back to **leadership**.

🌎 **Episode 10: Leading Real-World Learning**

What does it take to lead learning that actually prepares students for the world they will enter?

Four education leaders from across the United States and Europe come together to explore that question from very different perspectives.

🎙️ **Dr. Deloris Wallace-Brown** — Sumter, South Carolina
🗽 **Everett Stemridge** — Education Specialist, New York Department of Education
🌍 Marion Mansberger, ABD, MBA** — International Management & Leadership Educator
📚 Dr. Sharnez Givens-Williams — Elementary School Principal, Educational Leader & Literacy Advocate, Metropolitan St. Louis

💡 We talk leadership, teacher autonomy, curriculum, student agency, social-emotional learning, technology, competition vs. collaboration, global education—and the role schools play in preparing students for life beyond the classroom.

💻 And in true EDUCATΞUS fashion, the conversation itself is multimodal. Our guests talk, question, respond, and contribute their thinking through a shared Google Slide as the discussion unfolds.

🎉 **It’s our Season One finale, and it’s a conversation you don’t want to miss.**

🎙️ “The art of teaching has been lost.”

Shinita M. Simpson, EdS reminds us that teaching is more than delivering a curriculum. Great teachers bring their own skill, judgment, care, and creativity to the work—and understand how to make the curriculum work for the students sitting in front of them.

In Episode 9 of EDUCATΞUS, Shinita Simpson challenges us to think about what it really means to prepare teachers—not simply to implement curriculum, but to preserve and strengthen the art of teaching.

🎙️ “When teachers feel prepared and supported and valued as partners in the process, it becomes sustainable rather than just another initiative.”

Preparing teachers cannot simply mean introducing a new curriculum, program, or initiative and expecting implementation.

In Episode 9 of EDUCATΞUS, Shinita Simpson, EdS reminds us that sustainable change requires teachers to be prepared, supported, and valued as partners in the process. Teacher voice matters. Teacher preparation matters. And leadership support matters.
