Growing Through Connections

The theme of IABC’s March Membership Month was Connections, and the IABC-St. Louis chapter has connections in spades. Those connections paid off over the last couple of months as your current board members have been hard at work filling open positions on the Board.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to the following new St. Louis Chapter Board Members:

VP of Administration/Secretary – Melissa Cheevers, Marketing Manager at Researchscape International.
VP of Finance/Treasurer – Matt Frauenhoffer, Partner at Notion.
VP of Sponsorship – Tony Cheevers, Customer Success Officer at Researchscape International.
At Large – Beth Clauss, Big Fry at Small Potatoes Communications.

These vital additions to the Board were made by a unanimous vote of the current Board Members. The appointments were effective March 1, 2023. They join current Chapter Board Members:

Immediate Past President – Don Sanford, Partner at Smith Communication Partners.
VP of Communications – Ruth Thaler-Carter, Freelance Writer/Editor/Proofreader/Speaker/Author.
VP of Membership – Rebecca Abbit, Marketing Manager at Magellan Health.
VP of Professional Development/Events – Elyse Luecke, Junior Digital Producer at Moosylvania.
At Large – Amanda Pope, Director of Executive Onboarding and Special Projects at Washington University in St. Louis.

… and me, President – Elizabeth Sargis, Manager at Standing Partnership.

Since 2020, these warm, dedicated, talented and fun professionals – along with superstars Nichole Burgdorf, ABC, Communications Manager at Mercy, and Haley Sperr, Program Manager at Wise F&I, who each served a two-year term on the Chapter Board, retiring in 2022 – have been busy reviving our chapter.

Since we began, we have provided 10 virtual and one in-person networking and professional development programs. In the latter half of 2022, we shifted our focus to Board and Volunteer Development to help strengthen the chapter to provide even more value in the future, and it paid off! We have recruited a top-notch team of colleagues who are working hard to help you connect to all the things you need to thrive in your work and professional development.

Watch future posts where we will be getting to know each board member!

Opportunities for You

Meet me at IABC World Conference in Toronto!
June 4-7, 2023

As a business communicator, do you ever get the feeling that everything you do is for others?

Our relationships with the organizations and audiences we serve are nice, but we, too, need healthy, well-crafted meals of content and training. We need opportunities to gather with colleagues who “get it” and can help us strategize how to do our jobs better. Otherwise, we lack the deep wells of insight and best practices that allow us to keep serving others.

That's why Elizabeth Sargis, IABC-St. Louis chapter president encourages you to join her and other communications professionals for World Conference! https://conta.cc/3nIT8eN

For more information, visit the World Conference website: https://wc.iabc.com/. Early bird registration closes tomorrow, April 4, but St. Louis members also have a special opportunity to participate in a discounted group rate. The Minnesota and Chicago chapters have invited St. Louis members to join their regional group, which will get further discounts. If you are interested, email Elizabeth Sargis, [email protected], ASAP.

The Right Stuff, the title of Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book about the special qualities of U.S. test pilots, describes IABC-St. Louis Past President Don Sanford, too: Don had the right stuff to lead the chapter through difficult times.

“Everyone believes they are good at communicating,” Don says, “but doing this every day; bringing that skill to the table; helping people solve difficult, complicated business problems — I had no idea the impact my work would have on people’s lives and businesses.”

Read more about Don's role with the chapter and learn why he recommends serving on the local board! https://conta.cc/3Da89ev

New things!

Does that line excite your sense of possibility or raise your anxiety level?

It depends on the context, right?

Some new things are exciting, like a raise or a new pair of shoes.

Other new things, like having to adjust to new policies, procedures or a crisis can set off alarm bells.

As the new year begins to bring new challenges your way, practice new ways of reacting and adapting your attitude to better cope with changes.

Chapter president Elizabeth Sargis shares insights on the IABC-St. Louis blog to help make 2023 your best year yet!
