Hand washing is one of the best ways to protect yourself (and the people you love) from getting sick.
WHEN
• It’s important to wash your hands during these key times when you’re likely to come into contact with germs: before, during, and after you prepare food; before you eat; before and after you care for someone who is sick; after you use the bathroom; and after you blow your nose, cough, or sneeze.
HOW
1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with soap. Get the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “happy birthday” song from beginning to end 2 times.
4. Rinse your hands under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. But you can use hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water (unless your hands are visibly soiled). Just know that hand sanitizer doesn’t work on all types of germs and might not remove harmful chemicals like pesticides and heavy metals.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, this month is all about gratitude. Gratitude is an important part of self-care, and gratefulness helps us stay grounded when times are tough.
In the words of author Iyanla Vanzant, “We think we have to do something to be grateful or something has to be done in order for us to be grateful, when gratitude is a state of being.”
Not only can the act of being grateful protect our minds and bodies from harm, but it can help heal the wounds of adversity. Take the time to think about the things you’re grateful for each day. And join the TLC team @ Epworth Drop-In Center this month as we embrace an attitude of gratitude.

Our Story
TLC stands for Test-Learn-Change. Here at iFM Community Medicine we’re committed to helping teens stay healthy. We have a clinic at Epworth Drop-In Center on Tuesday and Friday from 1-4 pm. It’s open to ages 11-24, and is completely free of cost. We believe in giving you the knowledge you need now, to reduce your risk for disease later. We do through monthly life-skills classes and weekly activities at Drop-In. You can also stop by during clinic hours to talk to us one-on-one. We can even check your height, weight, and blood pressure if you want to know where you stand. Check out our page for upcoming events. Or check out https://ifm-stl.org/ for more information about iFM Community Medicine. Contact us if you’re interested in arranging some life-skills classes at your site. We come to you!
