When a musician truly loves performing something- they know it and learn it, and memorize it almost instantly, without any sheet music necessary.

It shouldn’t anybody’s job to spend their lives spoonfeeding music (writing/arranging) to people who don’t want to internalze the music to play it. Those musicians should do something else with their skills.

When a musician truly loves a music, they can perform it at any time- pitch reference or not- sheet music or not, other instruments with them or not.

Having lots of chops doesn’t excuse poor taste.

Having greast taste but no chops is not cool either.

Chops and taste are not mutually exclusive!

“If you wish to ensure efficient and painful failure in the music business, ALWAYS allow somebody else’s judgement of your art to have more importance than your own beliefs, ALWAYS allow others commentary to supplant your own thoughts about music, and make sure to NEVER attempt something nobody else has mastered already.”

If you want the positive outlook that manifests success as an artist, replace ALWAYS with NEVER, and NEVER with ALWAYS.”
