The grapes are taking off out at the farm!

We had a cold snap early in the season that killed most of the fruit this year and a hot summer that made for a rough growing season. We only lost one tree and that was a cherry that was planted last season. We did add lost of mulch and compost everywhere and built lots of hugel mounds this summer so I still feel like I got something done. Pictured is a Persian mulberry and was one of the first trees I planted.

Here is one of the hugel mounds I made last year taking off. Right now mostly purple vetch and wild mustard weeds but anything is better than bare ground and goat heads. I scattered 5 lbs of wildflower mix on the new mounds so hopefully I can get those rocking like this by next year.

This last trip to the farm we built hugle mounds in between some of the fruit trees to connect them and help retain water. We layered small logs and tons of cotton wood that we had around the property. Then layered old potting soil and topped with cow compost and mulch. I tossed about 5 lb of wildflower mix on top and watered in. I am building mulch "islands on our borders and a few on the interior of the property. Hopefully they will all connect eventually. The first one I built 6 years ago and it is now filled with pineberries , hollyhocks, apples ,plums, and mint. There is also some vetch and clover. I spread a build a soil cover crop mix all over the property and we still have some thing pop up. I will be using this page for farm updates from now on.
