![Sizing conductors and short-circuit ground-fault protection for A/C equipment is Easy! All you need to do is follow the equipment nameplate!
The nameplate short-circuit/ground-fault protection is sized to 225% of the load [440.22} and conductors are sized to 125% of load [440.32].
Understand that 240.4(G) overrides the limitations of 240.4(D) and that the A/C equipment has internal overload protection.
Note 1: If the wiring method was NM Cable (Romex), then the conductors are sized to 60C column of Table 310.16 = 10 AWG [334.80].
Note: 2: All equipment, including breakers, are rated for 75C conductor sizing using Table 310.16 [110.14(C)(1)(a)(3)].
