Their session, 𝘾𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙮: 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙙, 𝘿𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙙𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙩 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙇𝙞𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙮, will explore how traditional methods of making — from rammed earth walls to mass timber construction and native seed restoration — are being reimagined through digital modeling and fabrication.

Set against the raw landscape of the North Dakota Badlands, this case study examines the evolving relationship between hand craft and digital craft, and how their integration brings human touch, material honesty, and life back into complex, contemporary projects.

Matt McMahon is the Director of Landscape Architecture at Snøhetta with nearly three decades of experience working at the intersection of landscape, ecology, and architecture. He currently serves as Project Director for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota.

Dan Marty is a Senior Project Architect at Snøhetta whose work focuses on culturally significant projects that thoughtfully engage historic context, materiality, and collaboration across disciplines.
