I am running as a Democratic Candidate for Maine State Representative District 141. Parts of Sanford, Springvale, Shapleigh and Newfield.

Jack (John) McAdam moved to Springvale over 30 years ago with his wife, Ellen, a Springvale native who wanted to return home to work with her father at McDougal Orchards. Jack has a long history of volunteer and community service in Springvale. He has been on the Sanford Planning Board for 10 years and Site Plan Review Committee. He is also on the board of the Nasson Community Center. He has been an Election Clerk for a number of years and a Town Meeting member before Sanford became a City. He is the president of the Wyman Point Road Association, a private road association on Balch Lake. He is also on the board of Balch Lake Improvement Association. He was the Market Manager for the Sanford Farmers' Market for 10 years. He was on the board of the Maine Federation of Farmers' Markets until recently. He was on the board for Sanford Young Life for a few years and was also on the board of Partners for a Hunger Free York County and Sanford Downtown Legacy until they folded. Jack is passionate about Maine’s agricultural economy. As an owner of McDougal Orchards, Jack started Captain Jack’s Donut Shack at the orchard in 2005. The Donut Shack added to McDougal Orchard’s reputation as a “destination” for a classic Maine fall family outing. Jack’s commitment to local farming is also seen in his decade of work as the Market Manager for the Sanford Farmer’s Market and his past work as a board member for the Maine Federation of Farmers' Markets. Prior to farming and donut making, Jack had a successful 30+ year career at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, working primarily aboard Fisheries Research Vessels. Jack worked his way up from Second Mate to Captain in his career with NOAA, and was ultimately responsible for the safety and management of research vessels worth millions of dollars. His responsibilities for NOAA included careful budgeting that ensured the best and most efficient use of public dollars. Jack has three children and two grandchildren. Jack is particularly proud that two of his children are the 8th generation of the Hanson/McDougal family to work at McDougal’s Orchard.

Did you know that District 141 is new because of redistricting? It includes Springvale, Shapleigh and Newfield. Please stop by and meet me and other candidates.

Sustainability - A few years back we switched from diesel to biodiesel. We have two diesel tractors and a diesel Kubota RTV. There is no petroleum product in the biodiesel although as winter approaches we do have to add diesel so the the biodiesel won't gel.
Fun fact, the used shortening from the Donut Shack goes into to a 55 gallon drum. When full Maine Standard Biofuels will show up with a pump truck to remove it and eventually it goes into biodiesel and cleaning products.

Climate Change II.
In 2016 we applied for a Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant along with the help from ReVision Energy . We got the grant and on a Monday the installation started and by Wednesday afternoon we were sending electricity to the grid. The system will offset roughly 37,200 pounds of CO2 annually, That's a lot of cars.

One of my concerns is CLIMATE CHANGE.
We have all witnessed the extreme drought conditions and then drenching rains. Every winter it seems like we get less snow and if we get a lot of snow it rains a few days later. And the ice this past winter!
A few years ago we almost drained one of our irrigation ponds. We irrigate the dwarf trees, pumpkins and squashes. It had become infiltrated with weeds and never completely filled. So we had it dug out and lined, yes like a pool. Then we purchased 2,000 feet of aluminum pipe and a pump to pump water from our 3 acre pond to this irrigation pond. I had thought that we might not need to refill the irrigation pond again. I was wrong, every year since we have had to pump more water into the irrigation pond.

This past apple picking season we had some good rain storms. We had to block off some parking area so customers didn't get their cars stuck in the mud.
