Fleas and tapeworms are closely connected in cats because fleas can carry tapeworm larvae.
Flea Life Cycle
-Adult fleas live on the cat and feed on blood.
-Adult fleas lay eggs that fall off into bedding, carpets, and furniture.
-Eggs hatch into larvae in the environment.
-Larvae develop into pupae inside cocoons.
-Adult fleas emerge from the cocoons and jump onto a host (such as a cat).
-The cycle can be completed in as little as 2–3 weeks under favorable conditions.
Tapeworm Life Cycle
The most common tapeworm in cats is Dipylidium caninum infection.
-An infected cat sheds tapeworm segments ("rice-like" pieces) in its f***s.
-Tapeworm eggs are released into the environment.
-Flea larvae ingest the tapeworm eggs.
-The tapeworm develops inside the flea as the flea matures.
-A cat swallows an infected flea while grooming.
-The tapeworm develops into an adult in the cat's intestine and begins producing segments and eggs.
