The outdoor brooder room this evening. I added the latest batch of grow outs today, moved the oldest group out yesterday. These are 5-8 week olds. There’s over 100 birds in here- it might not look like it (there is also an outdoor run 😉). This pen is where they get exposed to a lot of new things - sunshine, wind, fluctuations in temperatures, rain, and the natural yuckies of the world- which is why I don’t sell the chicks once they’ve been moved out here. This is the time when their immune systems start building what they need to fight off everything the world will throw at them. The stress of a big move wouldn’t help them. This is where survival of the fittest happens. If they can make it through the next 3-4 weeks in here, they usually make it to adulthood without any issues.

While out checking on birds today, I snagged a couple pics of the Salmon Faverolles. They got moved to a new pen a couple weeks ago so they’re now up front instead of in the very back. The girls are all a bit rooster worn. I need to pick out one or two for the show season this next year. I plan to keep the hens of all breeds together for my show pen that way they don’t get their backs defeathered by the boys.

Today’s hatch of Crele Penedesenca. I set 12; 3 cockerels & 7 pullets hatched. Two went back in the hatcher. I didn’t get to candle these before setting them on lockdown, so I’m not sure if the two quit or just need some extra time. I’ll give them until tomorrow evening.

I wish this was a bit better focused. But I saw a post a while back asking when you could see a Penedesenca’s carnation comb. This bird is four weeks old and you can easily see his little sprigs at the back of his comb.

Today’s hatch of Tolbunt Polish. I think this is my biggest hatch of them so far.

Some of today’s turkey hatch as well as the oldest- which I’m trying to keep in the brooders as long as possible. I’m afraid they’re going to outgrow them though and move on schedule with the chickens of the same age.

Remember our little Olive Egger with the “eyebrows”? Well, she’s just been moved to the 3- month old grow out pen. And yep, those eyebrows have disappeared; but she’s got silver leakage in her neck- which I find interesting.

Mottled Houdan & Faverolles in a brooder together. Newly hatched and they already have those fluffy faces. 🥰
