🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨
The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an active phone scam targeting community members.
The Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports involving callers falsely claiming to be associated with law enforcement or a federal agency. Victims are being told they have an active warrant, are under a “gag order,” or face legal consequences unless they immediately provide payment.
These calls are fraudulent. Law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone, require payment to avoid arrest, instruct you not to speak to family members or attorneys, or request payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or other immediate payment methods.
If you receive a call like this:
• Hang up immediately
• Do not provide personal or financial information
• Do not withdraw or transfer money
• Contact local law enforcement to report the incident. Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office: (217) 753-6666
