Subject: Thursday JPES visit
Good afternoon, Dr. Bailey,
Robin VonKeller and I (5th grade) were wondering if you’d be able to model the Metatextual markers when you visit our classrooms Thursday. We’d love to see the teacher-role modeled. We’ve been attempting to use the markers, but with our limited time with you, we feel it would be more beneficial for us to see a model of what it looks like in the classroom.
I’ve attached the pdf we are using. We already have copies for the kids of pg 22 (Annexation of Hawaii – circle level).
If you could let us know if you’d be willing to do this, we’d really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Hello Dr. Bailey,
My name is Ginny Thaxton and I teach 2nd grade at JPES. I attended the “Reading is FUN-but-MENTAL” Close Reading training on January 12. I missed the training my team mates participated in back in October, but they were wonderful about sharing the information. I am so grateful my principal, Wanda Carroll-Williams, made it possible for me to be a part of your training in last week so I could see it firsthand. My students are getting the hang of it and it has really changed the way they respond to text and make connections. I have been blown away by the conversations that take place and new questions that arise as we have used the highlighters. I just wanted to tell you thank you for sharing this amazing resource with us. I have been so excited each time we use the highlighters because of how it has changed the way my students read and respond. We are learning together! Today I asked them to share one way the highlighters have helped them/why they like using the highlighters. Here are some responses:
“The highlighters help me remember the details in the passage.”
“When I look at the passage and see what I have highlighted, it helps me answer questions.”
“I like highlighting the vocabulary words because it helps me understand what the author is trying to tell me.”
I just wanted to share this with you! Thank you again for providing a wealth of incredible information. Have a wonderful weekend!
