WHEN THE TEARS DON’T MATCH THE FEELING

Sudden crying or laughter does not always reflect how a person feels inside.

Pseudobulbar affect, also called PBA, involves sudden and difficult-to-control episodes of crying or laughing. The reaction might seem stronger than the situation or completely unrelated to what is happening.

PBA has been reported in people living with neurological conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and ALS.

The person is not being dramatic or seeking attention. Protect their dignity. Stay calm. Reduce attention from others. Document what happened before, during, and after the episode.

Ask the healthcare provider:

“Do these episodes fit pseudobulbar affect, and what evaluation is appropriate?”

Do not dismiss a new behavior as “just dementia.” Sudden symptoms with facial drooping, weakness, speech trouble, or confusion require an immediate 911 call.

Cameras have been part of how we operate since day one. We talk about it before move-in, we run cameras in our shared spaces, and we put one in your loved one's room and share it with family whenever you want it.

This is common sense. It should not take a law from Governor Pritzker to get an operator to be transparent with the family of the person they care for. If a corporate assisted living or shared housing company needed a statute to open that door, that is the problem — not the solution.

We don't use cameras just to catch what goes wrong. We use them to understand sleep and behavior so we can adjust care and, often, avoid unnecessary psychotropic medication.

We've always welcomed families to watch. It never should have required a law.
