Good morning, Church! Our 9am Eucharist livestream is ready to go. Today we celebrate one of the very ancient feasts of the calendar, the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Have you wondered why Christmas is December 25, but the birth of John the Baptist is not on the same day of the month? Both feasts were established when the Roman calendar system in general use. Unlike the modern system which counts days of the month forward from the first, the Roman system counts the days of the month backward from the first day (inclusive) of the next month. Both Christmas and today's feast are eight days before the first day of the next month (Romans count the day you are starting from). SO from the point of view of the Roman calendar, which is still the official liturgical calendar of the church, the two feasts are actually on the same day of the month. St John the Baptist, the forerunner and last and greatest prophet, pray for us!
