Juneteenth Reflection: The Beat of Freedom
Written By Reverend Jawwad Jimi Love

As we celebrate Juneteenth, I reflect on this photo taken at the Covenant Freedom School Summer session; a powerful image stands before us: a row of traditional African drums beneath the American flag. This visual juxtaposition encapsulates the complex and paradoxical relationship between America and the identity of its once-enslaved citizens, who have profoundly shaped its heart and soul.

Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day is a poignant reminder of the delayed justice and ongoing struggle for equality that African Americans have faced. Yet, it is also a celebration of resilience, culture, and the enduring spirit of a people who have continually fought to carve out their place in a nation that has often marginalized them.

The African drums, symbols of cultural heritage and communal strength, stand in stark contrast to the American flag, a symbol of a nation built on ideals of freedom and justice. This paradox highlights the duality of the African American experience: a fight for inclusion and recognition in a country that prides itself on liberty yet has systematically denied it to many of its people.
These drums remind us of the rich cultural contributions that African Americans have made to the fabric of American society. Despite the oppressive forces of slavery and segregation, they have preserved and enriched their cultural heritage, bringing rhythm, music, and a unique vibrancy to the nation's identity. The beats of these drums are more than mere sounds; they are echoes of a resilient spirit, calls to remember the past, and rhythms that continue to shape the future.

As we reflect on Juneteenth, we acknowledge the pain and injustice endured by generations of African Americans. We also celebrate their contributions and the strength they have shown in the face of adversity. The image of these drums beneath the flag is a metaphor for this journey—filled with struggle yet marked by profound cultural and spiritual contributions.

The Covenant Freedom School Summer session embodies the ongoing commitment to educating and empowering the next generation. Here, we teach our children the importance of knowing their history, understanding their worth, and recognizing their potential. We instill in them the values of resilience and hope, ensuring they know their identity is deeply rooted in a legacy of strength and perseverance.

Juneteenth is not just a historical marker but a living, breathing testament to the quest for freedom and equality. It challenges us to confront the past honestly and to work diligently towards a future where the ideals of liberty and justice are fully realized for all. The drums beneath the flag remind us that the heart of America beats with the rhythms of those who have been its backbone and conscience.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us honor the legacy of those who have come before us and commit ourselves to building a nation that reflects its highest ideals. Let the drums of freedom and justice resonate, guiding us toward a future where everyone can live with dignity, equality, and respect.
