Last week, I had the honor of introducing House Resolution 972 to honor the extraordinary life and legacy of my dear friend, Spencer Leak Jr.
Spencer was more than a distinguished businessman. As vice president of Leak and Sons Funeral Homes, a historic family institution that has served families for generations, he guided people through some of life’s most difficult moments with dignity, compassion and grace.
In the community, Spencer dedicated himself to mentoring young people and creating opportunities for the next generation. Through his leadership with 100 Black Men, Operation PUSH and the Better Boys Foundation, he touched countless lives.
Our families also shared a special bond. Our fathers were close friends and fellow entrepreneurs who believed in building legacies that would endure for generations. Spencer carried that same commitment throughout his life.
My heart is with his wife, my dear friend Dr. Donna Leak, his children, Spencer III and Emma Sophia, and the entire Leak family. We are all better because of Spencer’s life and service, and his legacy will endure.
Rest well, my friend.
Families deserve a budget that reflects the realities they face every day.
This year’s state budget invests in affordability, protects critical services, and delivers relief for working families. From freezing the gas tax and expanding medical debt relief to creating a back-to-school sales tax holiday, we’re helping Illinois families keep more of their hard-earned money while continuing to invest in education, healthcare, public safety, and economic opportunity.
A budget should work for the people it serves and that’s exactly what this budget does.
Public art has the power to transform places, connect communities, and drive economic vitality.
Thrilled to welcome Monuments of Stillness by internationally acclaimed artist Carole Feuerman to The Magnificent Mile. This remarkable installation will activate one of Chicago’s most iconic corridors, attract visitors from around the world, and showcase the vital role arts and culture play in strengthening our economy and quality of life.
Investing in arts and culture is an investment in tourism, small businesses, vibrant communities, and Chicago’s future.

Grateful to share that HB4323 passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly, establishing July 25 as Emmett Till Day in Illinois.
Emmett Till’s life and legacy remain a powerful reminder of the consequences of hatred and the importance of pursuing justice. As the representative of the district that includes both Emmett Till’s childhood home and Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, I am proud to sponsor this legislation to ensure his story continues to educate, inspire, and challenge future generations.
Thank you to the advocates, historians, community leaders, and members of the Till family who helped make this legislation possible. Today, Illinois takes an important step toward preserving history and honoring a legacy that helped shape the Civil Rights Movement.
I’m still going strong at the Illinois State Capitol, working hard through the weekend to pass another balanced budget that prioritizes our community’s needs.
The budget isn’t just a list of numbers. It’s a statement of our values. The budget we pass will address our community’s greatest needs. That means we’re fully funding food security, healthcare, and infrastructure—all without new taxes on working people.
The night might be long, but I’m staying here until the job is done! Thank you for all your support!

Today, a major step forward for youth civic engagement in Illinois.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. Youth Voter Empowerment Bill has officially passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly and now awaits the Governor’s signature.
This legislation honors Rev. Jackson’s vision that every young person should enter adulthood not only with a diploma in hand, but with the tools and opportunity to participate in our democracy. By connecting voter registration opportunities with high schools, we are helping empower the next generation of civic leaders and strengthening our democratic institutions.
Thank you to Senator Robert Peters, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. Voter engagement leader Dr. Roberts, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Chicago Votes, educators, advocates, students, and the many stakeholders whose dedication helped move this legislation across the finish line.
Now, we look forward to the Governor signing this important bill into law.
