Congress didn’t recognize a race riot. Biden will make the site a monument. The president will designate the Springfield Race Riot National Monument on Friday, the White House confirmed to The Post.
Come Join Us In Support of the Creation of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot Monument:
The U.S. Department of the Interior invites you to participate in a community meeting on Monday, June 10 from 6-7:30 pm at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E Monroe St., Springfield, IL. The meeting will be an opportunity for the Biden-Harris administration to hear directly about the community's vision to commemorate the Springfield Race Riot of 1908 and the role it played in the nation’s history, including the formation of the NAACP. The National Park Service recently completed a special resource study regarding the site’s eligibility for inclusion in the National Park System. There is also bipartisan legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress to designate the site as a national monument.
The meeting will feature a speaking program with dignitaries, including Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Brenda Mallory and Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish and Wildlife and Parks Shannon Estenoz, after which there will be an opportunity to hear from local community members.
