AJOG: Quantifying the association between doula care and maternal and neonatal outcomes – OPQIC 05/27/2026

26 years of experience serving our community as doulas shows this evidence is true: doula care improves maternal and newborn outcomes. Here are a few key findings in a recent study by AJOC:

Maternal Outcomes Associated with Doula Care:

- Increased rates of vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC): 15–34 more VBACs per 100 patients who received doula care

-Improved attendance at postpartum office visits: 5–7 more patients per 100 attended postpartum follow-up visits

-Positive outcomes were consistent across: Black and White patients, and Publicly insured and commercially insured patients

-Benefits remained consistent when doula care included at least 3 prenatal visits

Infant Outcomes Associated with Doula Care:

-Higher rates of exclusive breastfeeding: infants were 20% more likely to be exclusively breastfed

-Fewer preterm births: 3–4 fewer preterm births per 100 deliveries with doula care
