This is a great example of what we mean by structured, unstructured training. She is participating in our everyday life while also having expectations on behavior and us working obedience to generalize the behaviors outside of our structured training sessions. If you can make training apart of your regular interactions you’ll have a better rounded dog. You can see, it didn’t take long and I’m still able to get work done while also incorporating training. It shouldn’t be one or the other because dogs don’t generalize behavior well. That’s why they do it in class but not at home or they do it at home but not outside or when people are around or etc. you get the point.

Virginia and Bandits first private lesson at Curious K9 was a success. We worked eye contact and engagement, which she will continue to practice at home to build up a longer duration that Bandit can hold. We then pair that with the, “leave it” command to build up muscle memory through repetition. So this behavior becomes automatic when he hears the command. Eventually, when Virginia tells Bandit, “leave it” he will look to her for an undetermined amount of time. This helps stop the pattern so many fall into where the dog reacts, they’re told leave it, given a treat and then the dog goes back to react at the initial thing they did before. Let’s break the pattern and teach extended engagement instead.
