The Memorial was officially dedicated on December 4, 2004. We have completed the necessary legal requirements to solicit and accept donations.
The Memorial was constructed to honor the 987,000 men and women from the Illinois who served our country during World War II. 22,000 Illinois citizens gave their lives in pursuit of liberty. FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS - With great sadness, we mourn the passing of one of the last surviving sailors who bravely served in the Pearl Harbor attack. He was 102. Mahaffey was aboard the USS Oklahoma on December 7, 1941, diligently preparing the ship for inspection when it was tragically torpedoed and capsized, leaving it on its side. In the face of this immense tragedy, Mahaffey demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience by jumping into the water and swimming swiftly to the USS Maryland, where he found safety. Every day, we remember and honor the sacrifices made by those like Mahaffey, ensuring that the memory of the Greatest Generation lives on. The Greatest Generations Foundation.

(JAN 05, 2025) FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS — It is with great sadness, we learn the passing or Pearl Harbor survivor, Mr. Harry Chandler, a Navy medic who helped pull injured sailors from the oily waters of Pearl Harbor after the 1941 Japanese attack on the naval base, has died. He was 103. RIP Harry.
