The Greene County Commission has announced the selection process for an Interim Sheriff following Sheriff Jim Arnott's nomination to serve as U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Missouri. Sheriff Arnott will continue serving until he is formally confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Under Missouri law, the County Commission is responsible for filling the vacancy by appointment. However, any person appointed will serve on a temporary basis only. The interim appointee, like any other candidate, would need to run and be elected by voters to continue serving in the role. The timing of a future election depends on when the vacancy occurs, and may be placed on a general election ballot or require a special election. The person elected would serve the remainder of the unexpired term through December 31, 2028.

Applicants must be a resident and registered voter of Greene County for more than one year, hold a valid peace officer license (POST), and have no felony convictions, among other requirements. Interested individuals can view more details by clicking the 'Interim Sheriff Selection Process' section on the homepage of www.greenecountymo.gov. Applicants are encouraged to apply early in case the federal confirmation process concludes quickly and the timeline is expedited.
