Proper hydration helps your heart pump blood more easily. Aim for 8 glasses daily, more when active or hot. Jazz up plain water with cucumber, lemon, or mint. Limit sugary drinks that contribute to diabetes and weight gain. Signs you're well-hydrated: pale yellow urine, good energy levels, and comfortable body temperature regulation.

Hollywood heart attacks don't match reality. Women and older adults especially may experience subtle symptoms: unusual fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, jaw or arm pain, or feeling of impending doom - not just chest pain. Trust your instincts. If something feels seriously wrong, call 911 immediately. Minutes matter for heart muscle survival.

Chronic stress releases cortisol and adrenaline, raising blood pressure and inflammation - both hard on your heart. Combat stress with the 4-7-8 breathing technique: breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Practice twice daily. Other heart-calming activities include gentle yoga, journaling, listening to music, or spending time in nature.
