This is the debacle in insurance today… and why I had to walk away… no I dont do breast reconstruction, but in the same vain… The insurance industry is making it impossible to run, manage and successfully have medical practices. Over the past week I’ve seen several patients with Medicare or TRICARE who were told they were not candidates for breast reconstruction using their own tissue. But that wasn’t the real story. The reality is that reimbursement from Medicare and TRICARE for these procedures is very low, and some surgeons simply cannot afford to perform them. That is a real system problem that needs to be addressed. But telling a patient they are not a candidate when they actually are is not the answer. Patients trust what their doctors tell them. When we say someone isn’t a candidate for a procedure, many people never seek another opinion. So if you are a patient with Medicare or TRICARE and you are being told you are not a candidate for DIEP flap breast reconstruction, ask a very direct question: “Is reimbursement affecting this recommendation?” Patients deserve honesty and transparency when it comes to their care. And we also need to have an honest conversation about fixing the reimbursement system so that surgeons can provide these procedures without being financially penalized for doing the right thing.

Dear Valued Patient,

It has been our sincere privilege to care for you and your vision over the years. Because of the trust you have placed in us, we feel it is important to share an update with honesty, clarity, and gratitude.

As you may be aware, Kimberling Vision Center closed our location at the end of 2025 due to ongoing insurance and administrative challenges beyond our control. At the same time, we are excited to continue our mission of caring for patients at Low Vision Specialists in Springfield, where we will remain deeply committed to providing the same compassionate, high-quality eye care you have come to expect as well as expand our services for low vision to assist people on the brink of blindness.

Because of the current state of affairs in the insurance industry, we have made the decision to move out of network with all insurance companies except traditional Medicare (when they approve us). This has been a difficult and disappointing process, especially knowing how it impacts our patients. In response, and with your needs in mind, we have significantly reduced our fees and transitioned to a cash-pay model. We are in the process of getting Care Credit, a medical credit card, to help, if needed.

With great respect and humility, we ask for your support. If you value the care we have provided and wish to continue receiving services from us, we kindly ask you to consider paying for your visits at the time of service. We will gladly provide a detailed statement that you may submit directly to your insurance company for out of network reimbursement.

This decision was not made lightly. It comes from our unwavering commitment to continue serving you with integrity, excellence, and personalized care—without compromise.

Today…I never saw it coming…but its here and I celebrate all we have accomplished over the last thirty years… all the people we have helped and interacted with…all the people that have passed through our doors and touched our lives…its been a ride for sure!
