Well just as all the silkies started laying again we will be moving barns and therefore, pens in the next week. What this means is they will stop laying for 2 months again after said move IYKYK….so there’s a very good chance that the eggs in the incubator and hatching now will be all that is available for a bit again.

I’ve started test breeding my blacks to ensure everyone is actually black and not dark blue, blue cream for blue or lav gene, and a couple other odds n ends. These chicks who end up showing an undesirable color for future breeding-like blue carrying lav bc someone in the blacks is actually blue and why the splash boy is now going to work….will be offered as “pet” chicks which also includes wrong number of toes, etc.

Once the blue creams are all tested, they will be split into two diff pens-blue based and lav based and bred accordingly to same gene boys. My OG blue creams are most def/likely blue based and from some very nice lines but they aren’t the true breeding for the rest of the world for “isabel”/“blue cream” so I do want to keep them separate.

Also…this book is worth its weight in gold for trying to learn color genetics. Poultry is a lot more in depth than rabbits.

Need this guide when I’m looking at that Blue Cream pen bc it’s a whole lotta rainbow instead of consistency.

Amazing what a week and a half away from a more dominant bird will do for filling out and confidence. Someone is acting like a big boy all of a sudden (first pic) where he was keeping a low profile before and tried to hide with the girls.

Most all the egg layers got to free range for a few days after the storms. NPIP testing complete for 2026 and everyone is back in their pens yesterday.

Chocolate Silkie Pen is all chocolate girls covered by either a chocolate or mauve c**k. During winter we combine but in the warmer temps each boy gets his own group.
