I want to thank City Councilor Gerry Martin for hosting a Public Safety Meeting regarding the condition of Vibra Hospital. City Council President Tracye Whitfield and Councilor Malo Brown also participated.

As I shared in a video earlier this summer, Vibra Hospital is in deplorable condition. The property is a threat to the Pine Point neighborhood and the entire city.

It is my expectation that the City of Springfield is fining Vibra Hospital daily for the condition they’ve left the property in. Broken windows, decaying infrastructure, and unkept grounds are all public safety hazards that can not be allowed to continue.

Vibra Hospital needs to identify the funds necessary to perform basic maintenance of the property. They are responsible for securing the property to prevent break ins and fires. Springfield Taxpayers should not be forced to utilize city services every time there is an issue, and if we do utilize city services, Vibra should foot the bill due to the condition of the property.

Councilor Martin has committed to hosting another meeting and I encourage all residents to participate to learn about how the Springfield City Council is working to address this issue.

Good morning Springfield. Special Permits are granted by the Springfield City Council to businesses and other projects who want to operate a business in a way above and beyond what city laws allow for.

Often time, these businesses follow the rules of their permits, and their investments bring stability and jobs to a neighborhood. They also support local community groups.

Sometimes, the business owners violate the rules of their permits, and become a nuisance to residents and other businesses in the neighborhood. In these instances, Code and Zoning Enforcement can cite the owners and work to get the permit owners into compliance.

Then permit holders refuse to change their operations to become compliant, it’s a problem. I support Councilor Melvin Edward’s plan to give Special Permits more teeth, and to empower Neighborhood Councils to call for hearings when property owners will not comply with their own permit rules.

Happy Friday! Today, I caught up with my friend Asiala Rivera, the newly appointed commissioner of the Springfield Redevelopment Authority. We shared strategies on how Springfield can strategically invest in properties to spur economic growth. Asiala is a shining star in our city, and an advocate for removing barriers for our residents to enter the trades.

It was also her first of what will be many visits to socialite coffee ☕️

I’d like to thank my friend Mechilia Salazar for hosting a wonderful tour of the Springfield JCC, located in the Forest Park Neighborhood of Springfield. The JCC hosts beautiful amenities, and has been a staple of the neighborhood for over 70 years. The JCC will also be a participating member of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation Summer Nights program - there’s something for everyone!

Proposition 2 1/2 continues to ensure that property taxes increases, while always painful, are not as high as they could be with no restrictions.

Many homeowners believe that the law prevents your personal property tax bill from increasing more than 2.5% annually - this is not the case.

Instead, the law caps the amount of tax revenue raised on existing taxable properties as no more than 2.5% over the prior fiscal year. Cities can still benefit from all new growth from the prior year (like new home construction.)

Communities always have the option of pursuing a Proposition 2 1/2 override to pay for services they would not otherwise be able to pay for.

Longmeadow recently did this to pay for a new school, while South Hadley and West Brookfield voted down proposals.
