We were so happy to welcome Kaitlyn McConnell from Ozarks Alive to Yeakley Chapel. She has done so much for this region we call home. We were also delighted to have Harry Bruinius from The Christian Science Monitor in the house. He is on a cross-country reporting trip on Route 66, from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Pastor Susan Schmalzbauer will be commissioned as a provisional deacon at the Missouri Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in St. Charles. This is a step on the journey to ordination.

In the United Methodist Church, "Deacons are clergy leaders who are called by God, authorized by the church and ordained by a bishop to a lifetime ministry of Word, Service, Compassion and Justice. Deacons exemplify Christian discipleship by being a bridge between the church and society. In the congregation, Deacons teach, preach, officiate ceremonies, offer pastoral care, and assist the elder in administering the sacraments. Outside the walls of the church, Deacons share the good news in word and in their advocacy for the poor, neglected and discouraged."

That time Yeakley Chapel was on the Smithsonian Folklife website.

"Yeakley Chapel began its life in the smoldering ashes of the Civil War. Named after a Methodist and Quaker family with ties to Tennessee abolitionism, Yeakley has hosted 4-H meetings of local youth and a 1926 discussion of 'How the Rural Economic Struggle Touches the Church.' Its 1852 cemetery includes both veterans of frontier revivalism and the granddaughter of a Syrian Lebanese immigrant. The oldest church standing on Greene County, Missouri’s stretch of Route 66, its 1887 building sits at the crossroads of American religious life."
