Pictured here are Daisy and Lee Adams. Daisy was a librarian at Lincoln School before schools were integrated in 1954. The school’s library also served as a public library branch for Springfield’s Black community both before and after the public library was integrated in 1947.
Lincoln High School was more than just a school to Springfield’s Black community during the era of legally enforced segregation. It also served as a library and a community center. The Lincoln High School that operated until 1955 was actually the second building to bear that name. The first Lincoln High School opened in 1884.
This is just one of over 100 images searchable in the Lincoln School collection. This collection consists of materials focusing on the two Lincoln Schools and its students, but also includes materials related to Springfield’s earlier Black schools. View the entire collection at bit.ly/2TEbQC7.

Zach from the Library Center recommends "Deep Cuts" by Holly Brickley.
"Listen, I love music... especially from the early 2000s to 2010... so 'Deep Cuts' immediately caught my attention. Each chapter is titled after a song, and I loved playing each track while reading. It added a whole new dimension to the experience and made the story feel even more alive. Such a creative and immersive way to read!
"I picked this book for my book club to change things up, and romance mixed with cool music vibes felt like the perfect choice. What really stuck with me was Percy’s growth. Watching her evolve, not just through love and heartbreak with Joe, but into a confident journalist and eventually a songwriter, was so empowering. She really finds herself, and I loved that journey. A fun, emotional read with a great soundtrack."
