"As followers of Jesus Christ were all called to live to in a way that not only seems counterintuitive, but quite frankly counterproductive. Blessed are the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, the cheek-turners, the enemy-lovers, and the cross-carriers? You’re kidding, right? How could such people ever hope to carve out a life for themselves in the world as it is, much less bring about any meaningful change? Yet, Nahum reminds us that what is built on the things that God hates cannot last. Eventually, it comes under the judgment of the One whose kingdom will never end and who calls us to live as citizens of that kingdom even in the midst of a world in which violence, falsehood, and greed can still build impressive empires on the sand."

What was foreshadowed in events like the fall of Ninevah has been revealed in the cross and will be fulfilled when every human empire and even history itself finally gives way to the eternal kingdom of God."

"Beloved, we must reckon with the image of God unleashing wrath and vengeance in Nahum because that is the same God able to truly save us. A God whose jealously cannot be aroused is a God whose love cannot be trusted. A God who cannot govern history cannot promise us eternity. A God who is not strong enough to destroy His enemies cannot hope to deliver His people, and a tamed God can never topple injustice. Part of the hope of the gospel is that the God whose nail-scarred hands are gentle enough to embrace our wounded hearts are also strong enough to crush evil utterly."
