UPDATE: Easthampton voters have approved a $6.9 million property tax override, with 3,310 residents voting in favor and fewer than 3,100 voting against it.

Easthampton voters are at the polls today deciding the fate of a $6.9 million tax override.

Supporters say it’s necessary to avoid deep cuts to schools, public safety and other city services. Opponents worry about the impact higher property taxes could have on homeowners already struggling with rising costs.

I spoke with voters on both sides of the issue, along with city leaders, about what’s at stake and what happens next.

Polls are open until 8 p.m. at Easthampton High School. City officials say they’re hoping to have results by around 8:30 p.m.

Where were you June 1, 2011? 🌪️

Yesterday marked 15 years since an EF3 tornado ripped through Western Mass. Touching down in the heart of downtown Springfield.

Can’t believe it’s been 15 years since the tornado hit Springfield. 🌪️

I was 13 years old at cheer practice in Connecticut when someone at the gym said, “We’re under a tornado watch.” We laughed a little because… tornadoes in New England? Yeah, right.

We were wrong.

My aunt called my mom after getting stuck on the highway while the storm moved through. She was terrified. I’ll never forget the color of the sky that day.

I had plans to go to the mall after practice, and on our way back to Holyoke I asked my mom if we were still going.

She looked at me and said, “If it’s still there.” 🤣

Fifteen years later, I still remember that day like it was yesterday.

Where were you on June 1, 2011?

And tonight on Western Mass News, hear from people whose lives were changed forever that day. One woman was just 9 years old when the tornado hit. She ran to her basement and came out to find her elementary school gone. Another was at work at MassMutual with no idea what was happening outside.
