A long overdue opportunity to recognize and honor a son of Springfield who served for many. 🇺🇸

It was great to run into former Commissioner Roger Tackett and express my gratitude for his distinguished service in the United States Marine Corps. 🇺🇸

I am frequently asked if we are related, and coincidentally, my husband does have an uncle named Roger who served two tours during the Vietnam War, although he is not the same individual.

What did you learn from serving in the military? I learned about discipline and its importance, developed an intense loyalty and love for the United States of America, and gained valuable insights into determination, perseverance, and self-sacrifice. Additionally, I acquired knowledge about survival, the true essence of brotherhood, and the value of gratitude.

What do you remember most about your service? On August 5, 1967, I was wounded by a sniper's bullet and owe my life to our Medical Corpsman, who saved me from drowning after I lost consciousness for approximately three days.

What would you like readers to know about your military experience? I have no regrets about serving, and I have always been extremely proud to be a Marine. The transition upon returning from Vietnam was challenging, particularly coming to terms with being a paraplegic and requiring a wheelchair for life; this presented more difficulties than my time in combat.

“The architecture of our political decision making is one that does not permit for people to express moderation, they have to pick a camp, says Hawkins. “In other countries, with the exception of the U.K., there is far more capacity for political subcultures to manifest in voting. We aren’t really polarized, we just don’t have choices.”

“This is partly by design. But political scientists say it’s a mystery how we evolved European-style parties into a two-party system. “We don’t fully understand how we came to this and we don’t really understand how to get out of this,” says Fiorina.

“The exhausted majority is a group that refers to two-thirds of Americans who feel frustrated by the political conversation, who are not ideologically oriented, but are more flexible in their political beliefs, who don’t feel well-represented by the political debate and are open to finding compromise in the political conversation,” says Hawkins.

“Voter behavior has not changed much over the decades because the alternatives that voters face have not changed.”
