THURSDAY QUESTION OF THE DAY!
Be honest...
What's the dumbest thing you've ever forgotten when heading out on the boat?
We'll start:
πΉ Left the drain plug out
πΉ Forgot the keys
πΉ Ran out of gas
πΉ Brought the fishing poles but forgot the bait
πΉ Launched the boat and realized the battery was dead
Or maybe you've got a story that tops them all!
Drop your answer in the comments.
The funniest one might just earn bragging rights for the rest of the season! π
And remember... if your outboard decides it's taking a vacation before you do, give BJ's Marine Service a call. We'll get you back on the water faster than your buddy can say, "Did you put the plug in?"
π Let's hear those boating fails! π

Keep Dad on the water, not at the dock. π€βοΈ
π§οΈβ Rain can do a LOT more damage to your boat than people realizeβ¦ especially if youβre not checking your drain plug and bilge system! βπ§οΈ
Hereβs a quick reminder from BJ's Marine Service π
β Heavy rain can quickly fill your bilge with water
π Forgetting your drain plug can turn your boat into a swimming pool
π¨ Dead bilge pump or weak battery = water has nowhere to go
πͺ« A failed float switch can keep your pump from activating
π Excess water can damage wiring, batteries, flooring, upholstery, and even sink smaller boats at the dock
Before the next storm rolls through:
β
Check your bilge pump operation
β
Test your float switch
β
Make sure batteries are charged
β
Verify your drain plug situation
β
Keep debris out of bilge drains
A 2-minute check today can save you thousands later. πΈ
Donβt wait until your boat is sitting lower than your neighborβs jon boat after a Florida thunderstorm. π

Think your outboard is running fine? Here's a quick question:
β When was the last time you changed your water pump impeller?βοΈ
Many boat owners don't realize that impellers can dry out, crack, or lose flexibility even if the boat isn't used much. A failed impeller can quickly lead to overheating and expensive engine damage.
β
Replace impellers regularly
β
Check cooling water flow every trip
β
Don't ignore weak "p*e stream" symptoms β
Save yourself from costly repairs later
A little preventative maintenance today can save thousands tomorrow and keep you on the water when the fish are biting!
"The best boating days are the ones that don't end with a tow back to the ramp." π

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom.
As we spend time on the water, with family, and with friends, let's take a moment to reflect on those who gave everything so we could enjoy these freedoms.
From all of us at BJ's Marine Service, thank you to our fallen heroes and the families who carry their legacy forward.
Have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

π£ Funny Friday at BJβs Marine Service π€π
Customer: βIt ran great when I parked it last year!β
Us: βThat was 11 months, 3 hurricanes, and 14 rainstorms ago... but let's take a look. πβ
Every week we hear:
β
"It was running fine yesterday."
β
"I only hit the sandbar a little bit."
β
"The battery was brand new... in 2016."
β
"I think it's getting fuel." (Famous last words.)
Boats have a funny way of developing problems while sitting still. Fuel goes bad, batteries die, critters move in, and electrical gremlins start their own family reunions under the cowling. π€£
Before your next trip to the water, give your boat a quick check-over and save yourself from becoming the star of someone else's boating story!
π Funny Friday Question:
What's the funniest excuse you've ever given (or heard) for why a boat wouldn't start? Share it in the comments! ππ£
βοΈ Technical Thursday β Signs Your Outboard May Be Overheating βοΈ
Most boaters know to watch the tell-tale stream, but that's not the only sign your outboard may be running too hot.
π¨ Common Signs of an Overheating Outboard:
β
Overheat alarm sounding or warning light illuminated
β
Engine going into "guardian" or reduced-power mode
β
Loss of power or poor performance at higher RPMs
β
Excessive steam coming from the exhaust or around the powerhead
β
Hot or burning smell coming from the engine
β
Engine shutting down unexpectedly
β
Cylinder head or engine block too hot to touch briefly
What causes overheating?
πΉ Worn or damaged water pump impeller
πΉ Clogged water intake screens
πΉ Sand, mud, shells, or debris blocking cooling passages
πΉ Thermostat stuck closed
πΉ Internal corrosion restricting water flow
πΉ Running too shallow and sucking up debris
π‘ Pro Tip: An outboard can still have a tell-tale stream and be overheating. The tell-tale only shows that some water is flowingβit doesn't guarantee the entire cooling system is working properly. That's why it's important to pay attention to alarms, performance changes, and other warning signs.
Ignoring an overheating issue can lead to warped cylinder heads, damaged pistons, blown head gaskets, and very expensive repairs.
If your outboard is showing any of these symptoms, don't wait until you're stranded on the water.

π€π§ WAY BACK WEDNESDAY at BJβs Marine Service π§π€
Back in the day, diagnosing an outboard over the phone was easyβ¦
π¨βπ§ βDoes it have spark?β
π¨βπ§ βIs fuel getting to it?β
π¨βπ§ βPull it again and see what happens.β
π
Nowadays? These newer motors have:
β
Computers
β
Sensors
β
Modules
β
Warning systems
β
Electronic fuel injection
β
Technology smarter than some people we know π
Thatβs why itβs getting harder and harder to diagnose problems over the phone.
Two motors can have the SAME symptom but need two completely different repairs.
β οΈ Beeping alarm?
β οΈ Losing power?
β οΈ Wonβt go over certain RPMs?
β οΈ Random shut downs?
It could be anything from a sensor issue to fuel delivery to electrical problems.
Sometimes the best answer is: π βBring it by so we can properly diagnose it.β
At BJβs Marine Service, weβd rather diagnose it correctly the FIRST time than guess and cost you more money later.

π€π§ TIP TUESDAY π§π€
Choosing the RIGHT propeller for your boat and outboard can make a HUGE difference in performance, fuel economy, and overall ride quality.
A prop isnβt just a βone size fits allβ part! π
Here are a few quick tips when selecting the right prop for your setup:
β
Think about how you use your boat:
Fishing boats may need better low-end power for quick takeoff. Ski/tow boats benefit from faster acceleration. Cruising boats may want better top-end sp*ed and fuel efficiency
β
Pitch matters
Lower pitch = quicker hole shot & pulling power, Higher pitch = more top sp*ed (if your motor can handle it)
β
Diameter makes a difference The right diameter helps your motor push the boat efficiently without overworking the engine.
β
Watch your RPMs Your outboard should run within the manufacturerβs recommended WOT (wide open throttle) RPM range. Too high or too low can hurt performance and engine life.
β
Damaged props cost you money Bent blades, dings, or vibration can reduce fuel economy and even damage your lower unit over time.
π Not sure what prop is best for your setup?
Bring us your boat and motor info and weβll help point you in the right direction!

β Donβt let the wrong prop leave you struggling to get on plane while your buddy is already at the fishing spot. π
