Windows 11 24H2/25H2 Reliability Advisory

Microsoft has recently acknowledged several significant issues affecting core shell components of Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. These issues impact essential user-facing features and can cause noticeable instability on updated systems.

What Has Been Confirmed

Microsoft and multiple independent reports have documented problems affecting:

File Explorer — freezing, crashing, and delayed responsiveness

Start Menu and Taskbar components — failing to load, disappearing, or becoming unresponsive

System Settings and shell host processes — intermittent crashes or failure to open

Recovery Environment (WinRE) — in some cases, USB keyboards/mice become unusable, making system recovery difficult

Application compatibility — certain apps fail to launch or behave unpredictably after the update

Driver and component conflicts — particularly during or after cumulative updates

These issues have been severe enough that Microsoft has released advisories, temporary workarounds, and in some cases emergency patches.

How Users May Be Affected

Depending on the system configuration, users may experience:

Reduced system stability

Difficulty opening or navigating core features

Intermittent crashes or slowdowns

Problems performing system recovery

Unexpected behavior after installing cumulative updates
