🐾 CAT CPR: A Quick Life‑Saving Guide 🐾

In an emergency, every second matters. Here are the essential steps to help a cat or kitten who isn’t breathing.

1️⃣ Check Responsiveness & Airway
Gently call their name, look for movement, and clear the airway by pulling the tongue forward.

2️⃣ Check Breathing & Heartbeat
Look for chest movement. If there’s no breathing, feel for a heartbeat on the left side of the chest. If your cat is not breathing and has no heartbeat, start CPR.

3️⃣ Begin Chest Compressions
Lay them on their side. Use one hand to give 30 gentle compressions at a steady rhythm.

ONE HANDED TECHNIQUE: Wrap your hand around the sternum at the level of the heart with your thumb on the up side and the rest of the fingers underneath.

TWO HANDED TECHNIQUE: Place one hand over the other, with the heel of the hand directly over the heart. Lock the elbows, shoulders should be above the hands. Compress 1/3 to 1/2 the width of the chest. Make sure the chest comes fully back up (recoils) before compressing again.

Perform chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute.

Perform cycles of 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths.

4️⃣ Give Rescue Breaths
Close the mouth, seal your mouth over their nose,

Gently close the cat’s mouth and extend the neck to open the airway. Cover the nose with your mouth and give 2 small breaths — just enough to see the chest rise.

Give a rescue breath over 1 second. As soon as 2 rescue breaths are delivered, resume compressions.

Briefly check for a heartbeat and spontaneous breathing every 2 minutes.

If there are two rescuers, switch jobs every 2 minutes. Minimize time with no compressions.

5️⃣ Continue CPR & Seek Help
Repeat 30 compressions + 2 breaths until they breathe on their own or you reach a veterinarian. Continue CPR until you reach a veterinary hospital.

❤️ A Skill Worth Knowing
We hope you never need it — but being prepared can make all the difference.

In the absence of CPR, there is little chance of reviving a cat beyond 10 minutes. Good quality CPR can buy you the time you need to get the cat to the vet.

TEXAS! Animal Caregivers rock!!!

is a day to celebrate the extraordinary caregivers who pour their hearts, strength and patience into giving rescued animals the safe, loving lives they deserve. Being a sanctuary caregiver means long days in the heat, rain, and cold. It means preparing endless meals, cleaning habitats, monitoring health and responding to emergencies. It means learning each animal’s personality, history, fears and joys, and it means celebrating small victories and holding space for difficult moments. ❤️

Caregivers are the steady hands and open hearts behind every recovery story. They are the reason traumatized animals learn to trust again. They are the reason sanctuaries feel like home. Thank you to our incredible Black Beauty Ranch caregivers and to the dedicated members of our leadership and facilities teams, who are always stepping in as caregivers to lend a helping hand whenever it’s needed. Your dedication does not go unnoticed. 🥰

💦 🐕 WATER INTOXICATION 🐕 💦

After an 18-month-old canine died from playing in a kiddie pool, a Veterinarian has issued a warning.

Allowing your pup to enjoy the water is great, but it's important to know the warning signs of water intoxication, which can BE FATAL!

During the heat of the summer, many people head to lakes, rivers, beaches, or pools to enjoy the summer months, and often, they're accompanied by their furry canine friends. Some turn to backyard Kiddie Pools.

According to the American Kennel Club, signs of water intoxication can include the following:

⚠️ lethargy
⚠️ bloating
⚠️ vomiting
⚠️ loss of coordination (including stumbling, falling, or staggering)
⚠️ restlessness
⚠️ drooling
⚠️ pale gums
⚠️ dilated pupils
⚠️ glazed eyes

If your dog is showing any of these signs or you're worried about the amount of water they've consumed, you should call your vet immediately. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

💛 Keep Their Heart Safe: The Importance of Heartworm Prevention
Heartworm disease is serious, painful, and completely preventable. Just one mosquito bite is all it takes for a pet to become infected—and here in Texas, mosquitoes are active almost year‑round.

Keeping your pet on monthly heartworm prevention is one of the simplest and most loving ways to protect their health. It’s safer, easier, and far more affordable than treating heartworm disease once it develops.

A few seconds each month can protect a lifetime of love. 🐾💛

Be honest… are they a tiny cuddle bug or a full‑blown bed hog who somehow takes up all the space? 😆💤

An Animal Sanctuary in our Texas Backyard.

Did you know goats are burpers… just like us? Their secret lies in the rumen, a specialized chamber of the goat’s stomach. In adult goats, this rumen can hold four to five gallons of plant material. It breaks down cellulose and acts as a bubbling fermentation vat where billions of microbes work nonstop to digest the tough fibers goats love to munch.

All that fermentation creates gas—lots of it—and the only polite way out is through a series of loud, healthy burps. Even Fiddlesticks contributes her own delicate, ladylike versions. 🤭

Losing Rufio was one of the hardest things our family has gone through, but Dr. Conner and Brandon at Angel Oaks Pet Cremation were so kind, caring, and genuine every step of the way.

They treated Rufio and our family with so much love and respect, which made a very difficult time a little easier. We were also amazed to receive Rufio's memorial package the very next day, including his ashes, nose print, and paw print.

We are so thankful for the care they showed our family and for helping us honor Rufio's memory. We highly recommend Angel Oaks Pet Crematory.
