The Design Process: a crucial part of the design process is creating the furniture plan. It determines the proper scale and dimensions of the pieces you need to be looking for and how many pieces, which helps to set the budget for your room.

I remember when we presented the design for this living room and our client was concerned we had too much furniture planned for the room. We assured him that it was going to be perfect for the cozy space they wanted. The wrong furniture plan is such a common mistake we see, whether the wrong layout, amount, scale, or all of the above. The furniture plan is the foundation of the room, so getting it right is so important for a successful room.

Mixing design elements is key to a successful room, but how do you do it right and make it a cohesive space?

You must have the areas of consistency in the room, too - in this kitchen we had a variety of wood and metal tones playing together, so we tied them all together by using the same Cambia quartz on all the counter tops and breakfast room table. 😃

Designers don’t just make a space “pretty”, we design it to be functional first. The original layout to this small master bathroom didn’t make any sense …. And our clients weren’t afraid to get rid of their bath tub. So, we reconfigured and now they have a fabulous spa like shower and tons and tons of storage! This stunning quartzite is a contender for one of our master bathroom remodels. Walls or countertops - where do think we’ll use it?

The finishing touches are the heart and soul of the room. Without them, a room can still be beautiful, but it doesn’t live and breathe ; it doesn’t hug you.

Part of our process is our Finishing Touches meeting. It happens the late in the process, when we have an idea of when we will be able to delivery at least 80% of your furnishings. Then we meet to talk about the details that make the room yours. We learn what key pieces you have to place in the room that will talk to you - your family photos and mementos you have collected that tell the story of your life. And from there, we talk about the rest of the items we can bring to bring the room home. To make it feel like YOUR home.

Some of my favorite days are the ones we get to be “in the field”. We had a concept meeting this morning where we get to dream of what the rooms can be. And this afternoon, we did an electrical walkthrough where we get say exactly where we want the lights and plugs to be. You appreciate that so much when you are living in a space where you can’t find an outlet or your room is too dark! 😃
