A Chicago-area pregnant woman is recovering after doctors successfully removed a massive 27-pound uterine fibroid while preserving her pregnancy in a rare, high-risk surgery.

Brionna Johnson was warned by several physicians that she might need to terminate her pregnancy and have a hysterectomy due to a massive growth. Instead, Dr. Pierre Johnson at Loretto Hospital, on Chicago's West Side, performed a rare surgery to remove a 27-pound fibroid, allowing her pregnancy to continue. 🎥:

Dr. Janell Green Smith was a Black Midwife who dedicated her life to improving Black Maternal Health Outcomes. Dr. Janell spoke out about what brought her to midwifery, how maternal mortality rates in this country were mostly preventable, & how Black women should not have to fear death in birth.

The news that Dr. Janell Green Smith has tragically died during childbirth is absolutely heartbreaking ❤️‍🩹

We grieves her death as a systemic failure and injustice. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, & the midwifery community.

🖤 Motherhood: The Playlist 6/8 For @erykahbadu, motherhood didn't interrupt her music—it became part of it. Erykah Badu's debut album dropped February 1997. One month later, she got pregnant. Mama's Gun—her 2nd album named after maternal protection—was released the day her son was born. By 2001, Badu had a 4-year-old son and 3 GRAMMYs. Then she became a doula. She's delivered over 50 babies since, including artist Teyana Taylor's. In an interview with ESSENCE, she described her approach: 'It's a sisterhood. It's childbirth, it's a ceremony, it's a spiritual walk. We work throughout the whole pregnancy so that the baby enters the world at a high peaceful vibration. The first thing the baby sees is some fly s**t.' 👶 With first babies, the head often drops into the pelvis around 36–38 weeks. 👩‍🍼 With later pregnancies, studies show it’s common for engagement to happen during labour itself (Coad & Dunstall, 2020). Why? Your body has done this before. Your muscles and tissues are more flexible, so baby may sit a little higher until contractions guide them down. If you’d like to give baby the best chance of finding their way: 🤸‍♀️ Forward-leaning inversions (30 seconds a day) 🛌 Side-lying release (with a partner’s support) 🧘 Upright, forward and open positions such as sitting on a birth ball, walking or gentle hip circles ✨ Trust your body, trust your baby.
