Hardest part of my job.
One of the hardest parts of caring about people is knowing you can’t force them to protect themselves. You can explain it, warn them, and genuinely try to help — but at the end of the day, they have to make the decision.
Then sometimes the call comes later:
“Hey, I’m reaching out because I have a client who was just diagnosed with a serious illness (or suffered a major injury) and can no longer work or earn an income. They don’t have long-term disability coverage. Is there anything they can do now?”
And the painful truth is this:
The only real solution would have been preparing before the diagnosis or injury happened.
You cannot buy protection after the emergency has already started. Insurance is one of the few things people hope they never need — until the moment they desperately do.
That’s why advisors and agents have a responsibility to at least have the conversation.
Not to pressure people.
Not to scare people.
But to give them the opportunity to say “yes” or “no” while they still can.
Because when someone is younger and healthier, they usually have options. After a life-changing event, those options may disappear completely.
Sometimes the greatest act of caring is simply making sure people understand the consequences of waiting.
