Time for a check up!

As the temperatures are rising and we are heading straight into spring, now is a great time to schedule your irrigation check up.

As the temperature starts to cool and turf grass goes dormant, now is the best time to think about shutting off your irrigation system and getting it set up for the winter. Take the bite out of Mosquitoes.

Did you know that your irrigation system can directly impact the amount of mosquitoes in your yard? By keeping your system well maintained you can in turn reduce the amount of mosquitoes flying around.

But How?

First ensure that none of the sprayheads are leaking, leading to standing water. Any water standing in the yard for more than 5 days is likely to start breeding mosquitoes.

Secondly make sure that your valve boxes and meter boxes are not full of water.

If they are, there are 3 things that are likely causing this, which can easily be rectified.

1. A spray head or rotor may be spraying over the valve box and therefore causing water to get inside.
2. Water run off from the ground will naturally pool in these areas.
3. The valve or meter may have a leak, which is often paired with the ground being soft nearby.

If you are unable to adjust the sprinkler heads to prevent them spraying into valve boxes or if the valve boxes are being filled by run off you can add a mosquito dunk into the box that will kill off the larvae.

If you suspect a leak, contact us and we can help you get it fixed and in turn reduce the mosquito impact of your yard.

When in drought, check it out…

Although we are not technically in a drought, with the extreme temperatures and heat advisories in place, now is a good time to check on your irrigation system.

Excess heat and drought conditions can put a strain on your irrigation system and highlight issues you might not normally see.

By checking your irrigation system you will not only be able to save water but also save your plants that might otherwise be struggling. Here are a few things to look out for:

1. Overspray and run off.
You can prevent overspray by making small adjustments to the arc of the sprinkler head and using the cycle and soak method will prevent excess run off and no more watering the driveway.

2. Muddy areas or flooded valve boxes.
A very muddy area in your yard, at a time when there has not been much rain could indicate either a leak in a pipe, valve or an area that is being over watered.

3. Brown sports or rings on turf.
This can indicate that the nozzle either needs replaced or cleaned to make sure even coverage is achieved.

4. Dry edges or dying plants.
Check your sprinkler heads to ensure they are covering all of your plants and catching the edges of the turf where it meets the hardscape.

5. Time your watering well.
The best time to water your yard is very early in the morning, ideally before dawn, to prevent excess evaporation.

After doing a check of the irrigation system, consider planting some natives instead which are more suited to this climate, will survive better in these conditions, and will save you water.
