🐢 TRASH TALKIN’ TUESDAY: Where does that plastic bottle actually go? 🐢
Spoiler alert: If it’s dropped on the ground in Harnett County, there’s a high chance its final destination is the Cape Fear River.
A recent Duke University environmental report found that a massive 80% to 90% of all litter found in North Carolina water sources is plastic. 😵💫 Unlike organic material, plastic never truly biodegrades. It just breaks down into tiny microplastics that threaten fish, birds, and our drinking water supply.

By participating in a river or creek-side litter sweep, you are acting as a human filter, stopping the trash before it has a chance to harm our aquatic wildlife or contaminate our water.
Paddle teams, bank walkers, and trail lovers, let's team up to keep our waterways pristine. 🛶
Drop a 💧 below if you love our rivers, lakes, and streams and want to keep them trash free!

We know that are powerful. 🌲 "Communities Thrive on Trees, " a data-packed guide from NC State Extension, proves just how massive of an impact our urban canopy has on daily life in North Carolina.
Green space, erosion control, stormwater management and, of course, natural beauty are just some of the reasons to value our leafy friends. From slashing residential cooling costs by up to 50% to filtering out millions of pounds of air pollutants, trees are working overtime for our communities.

Synopsis: “A Salon Story: Fact, Fiction, and the Farmer”
In the lively, gossip-filled atmosphere of Curl & Whisper Salon, a group of regular clients buzzes with excitement over the latest viral headlines, social media reels, and alarming claims about farm bills, food chemicals, and AI-generated “news.” As dryers hum and styling chairs turn, the conversation flows freely with half-truths and sensational stories.
The mood shifts when local farmer walks in for a haircut. With calm authority and real-world experience, Mr Farmer gently interrupts the chatter and encourages everyone to pause and check their sources. He calmly debunks the specific claims the women were discussing — revealing lobbying influence, AI-generated misinformation, twisted data, and emotional manipulation — while emphasizing the importance of primary sources such as university extension offices, peer-reviewed studies, and actual scientific data.
Through warm, relatable dialogue and humorous salon banter, the skit illustrates how easily misinformation spreads in everyday conversations and the value of critical thinking. Earl’s message lands: just because something is repeated often in groups or goes viral doesn’t make it true. Bots are active, AI isn’t infallible, and real farmers and scientists remain the most reliable sources of practical information.
The presentation ends on an uplifting note with the salon patrons reflecting on the lesson and the timeless reminder to verify before believing or sharing.
This skit was proudly presented by the Western Harnett FFA to the Anderson Creek Garden Club / as the first of five practice presentations in preparation for the upcoming state competition. It effectively combines entertainment, education, and timely media literacy in a fun, community-friendly format.
It was an excellent, entertaining and relevant experience for all!
A great way to celebrate NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK!!
