Meet our newest addition to the orchestra, Joanna Wu, principal flute. Swipe to read some fun facts about her and if you'd like more, read her full interview below:
- What instrument do you play now and why did you start playing that instrument?
I play the flute, and I fell in love with its sound the very first time I played it. I’ve always enjoyed trying different instruments, but there was something about the flute that really clicked with me. My older sister played it too, and watching her inspired me to pick it up myself. I also love how elegant and beautiful it is!
- Are you familiar with Spokane or new to the area?
I’m new to the area, but I’m excited to explore everything the city has to offer. Spokane Falls and Riverfront Park are at the top of my list—the views are absolutely beautiful!
- What's a piece you never get tired of performing, or a favorite piece?
Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé - it’s a beautiful French work filled with incredible colors and harmonies, and the flute has such an expressive role throughout the piece. Every time I perform it, I discover something new, and it remains one of my all-time favorites.
- What’s something you love doing outside of music?
Before music became my career, sports were a big part of my life. I’ve played tennis since I was young, and it’s still one of my favorite ways to stay active and spend time with family and friends. I also enjoy other racquet and team sports, and I’m always up for a new challenge.
- What concert are you most looking forward to this Symphony season?
There are so many incredible concerts to look forward to this season, but I’m especially excited for Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and our New Year’s Eve concert featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, conducted by James Lowe. Both are extraordinary works, and I can’t wait to share them with our audiences.
- What is a fun fact you love to share about yourself?
I was a piano major in university. I've had the privilege of collaborating with ensembles and colleagues over the years, and still enjoy making music whenever I can. These days, I mostly play for fun and love revisiting my favorite repertoire.
