Parents, the journey of nurturing an adult child struggling with addiction is paved with complex emotions—maybe you’ve offered a safe place in your home out of love, only to feel the sting of betrayal. It becomes all too familiar to feel the weight of anger, anxiety, contempt, disgust, fear, frustration, guilt, shame, and sadness. The emotional list goes on and on...right? I’ve been there, thinking our support is a lifeline, only to discover our sanctuary has transformed into a covert haven for their battles.
But from this whirlwind of emotions, an important revelation unfolds. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 -- 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠! As a parent who has been there, I’ve helped and seen the transformation that blooms when parents choose to stand in their confidence. It’s a steely resolve that says, “I care deeply, but I also recognize true help doesn’t enable—it encourages responsibility and change.” This is the heart of self-care and resilience building.
It’s time to prioritize your peace as much as you do their recovery. Your loving efforts are noble, but they shouldn’t anchor you to despair. Stand tall in your resolve to foster resilience—yours and theirs. True support co-exists with courageous love and self-preservation.
