Richard Zane Smith shares

"What have they done to our Sister?"
Beans and Squash Lament.

It is a response to the genetic modification of Corn (also Squash) in our country and the world. These Sisters are from the Americas and the world receives corn and have embraced both Corn and Squash and Beans for hundreds of years. They even have their own stories of them in their cultural teachings today. Well over 90% of the traditional food of corn sold is GMO modified in the United States. That means (among other things) that our children ingest high amounts of things like roundup that's been placed within the GMO Corn DNA itself. They do this to make the corn sprouts tolerant of the spraying of pesticides in the miles of fields in places like Nebraska, and Idaho, and many other states that are the heartland of food production in our country. So when Richard Zane Smith makes a piece of art that laments the fate of Corn, we lament as well.

Indigenous Art speaks searingly important truths to power and towards the imbalances in our world that we all face today. It's important to understand the meanings within the art whenever possible.
