THROWBACK THURSDAY: Manito Park's Duncan Garden, formerly known as Sunken Garden, circa 1910-1920.

The garden became ‘sunken’ when Manito’s first superintendent, Charles Balzer, hauled out 42,500 wagonloads of loam, which were then used in the gardens of all the City’s parks. The formal garden was designed and built in 1912 by John Duncan, Manito’s second superintendent, after whom the garden was ultimately named.

**Exciting News, Everyone!** The Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden in Manito Park will open tomorrow (April 1)! The garden will be open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Originally designed by legendary landscape architect Nagao Sakurai, the Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden was completed in 1974 and symbolizes the friendship between Spokane and its sister city, Nishinomiya, Japan.

The garden is named to honor Ed Tsutakawa, who played a crucial role in establishing the sister-city relationship with his ancestral home of Nishinomiya and in bringing master designer Nagao Sakurai from Japan to assist in the garden’s development.

Our Voodoo Lily only blooms for a few days! Swing by the Gaiser Conservatory to get a rare glimpse of this funky smelling flower!

What’s that smell?? It’s the Voodoo Lily in full bloom at the Gaiser Conservatory in Manito Park! Voodoo Lily’s (Amorphophallus) have a notoriously foul smell, often described as rotting flesh or spoiled meat, designed to attract pollinators like flies and beetles. This flower only blooms for a few days so swing by the conservatory and give it a whiff, if you dare. 💀
