Pictured is Opal Lee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth. After learning that enslaved people in Texas were not informed of their freedom until June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—Lee dedicated much of her life to ensuring this history would not be forgotten. Her advocacy, education efforts, and cross-country walks helped build awareness of Juneteenth and contributed to its recognition as a federal holiday in 2021.

marks the day freedom reached those who had long been denied it—and reminds us how far we still must go. It is a day to honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Americans while reflecting on the unfinished work of creating a more just and equitable society. As we commemorate this important chapter in our nation's history, we also reaffirm our commitment to advancing opportunity, belonging, and dignity for all.

This year, YWCA Spokane was proud to join thousands of community members, advocates, allies, and partners at Spokane Pride . We were especially honored to march alongside our partners at Kalispel Tribe Victim Services and Spokane Domestic Violence Coalition, a meaningful reminder that building a stronger, more inclusive community requires collaboration, shared commitment, and collective action.

We're so grateful to Spokane Pride and the many volunteers whose dedication made this year's celebration possible. Their commitment to creating an accessible, welcoming environment helped make Pride a space where people could connect, celebrate, and experience the joy of belonging. On Saturday, we had the honor of attending, tabling, and speaking at the Sativa Transue Memorial 5K in Cheney. Almost five years after Sativa was killed by her then-boyfriend, the community gathers to remember her and remind survivors everywhere that they are not alone. Thank you to the EWU Exercise Science Club for hosting this annual event and supporting our programs!
