This is Pastor Debbie Montzingo. Today, she serves as Pastor at Bethany Covenant Church in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Pastor Debbie received her MDiv from Fuller Seminary in 2013 and was ordained by the Evangelical Covenant Church in 2018. An all-around inspiring human. And the jacket? She made it. I am so inspired.

You may recall the podcast episode Debbie and I recorded last year in which she gifted us with insight around creativity and spirituality. My favorite part of that discussion was Debbie’s description of God as the original creator.

The instinct to create may be a part of our souls that we tend to bury behind obligations and insecurities but…I believe it exists in every human.

What are you creating right now?

What an inspiration! Lauren Tran thought she would go to medical school but, instead, followed her heart and her passion. Love a good, 'road less traveled," kind of story ❤

Happy Birthday, Vincent! I loved this article. The special brilliance of his work is a given. But the science behind it was new to me and especially fascinating! 🎨💫

The Fluid Dynamics of “The Starry Night”: How Vincent Van Gogh’s Masterpiece Explains the Scientific Mysteries of Movement and Light “In a period of intense suffering, Van Gogh was somehow able to perceive and represent one of the most supremely difficult concepts nature has ever brought before mankind.”

I absolutely love stories that include late starts. Art has no expiration date 🎨

Happy spring! Mattie Lou O'Kelley was born on a farm in Georgia. In her fifties, she began to paint and created idyllic scenes like this work depicting shapely hills, blossoming trees, and workers tending to fields. In her colorful scenes, the sun is almost always shining, the people are in motion, and the crops are plentiful.

When O'Kelley passed away in 1997, The New York Times reported on the moment that Robert Bishop, an art dealer, and collector and later the director of the American Museum of Folk Art (in Manhattan), first encountered her work. In 1975, he was in Atlanta to lecture about quilts at the High Museum, and Gudmund Vigtel, the director of the museum, traveled to Atlanta by bus to show him O'Kelley's pictures. Bishop was astonished and immediately became entranced with the artist's ''unique vision.'' He immediately canceled his flight back to Detroit, where he was director of publications at the Henry Ford Museum, and drove 50 miles to find the artist, tracking her down in her one-room cabin in sleepy Maysville. They became friends and worked together to bring her work to the attention of museums and other collectors.

The Big Farm in the Spring; Mattie Lou O'Kelley (1908-1997), Maysville, Georgia; 1976; Oil on Canvas; 36 x 24"; gift of the artist; 1977.1.1.

Adam Pinkham, founder of Offset Cider Works joined me today to talk about life as a creative entrepreneur. He is moving his business forward towards a really exciting future and takes time to share a bit of wisdom with us. I was very taken by his advice to keep your circle of close advisors small, listen to your own voice and to leave lots of room for the unknown. Lots of wisdom here, folks!
