Every year, fire season reminds Eastern Washington that living in beautiful rural areas comes with real challenges.

Communities like Cheney, Mica, Deer Park, and throughout Spokane County face increased wildfire risk due to dry fuels, wind, open terrain, and expanding development near timber and grassland areas. Officials are already warning that 2026 could bring elevated wildfire potential across the Inland Northwest due to low snowpack, dry conditions, and forecasted heat.

Wildfire preparedness is not just for firefighters. Property owners, businesses, ranchers, and rural communities all play a role in reducing risk before the first smoke column appears.

A few simple steps make a major difference:

• Clear dead brush, pine needles, tall grass, and debris around structures
• Create defensible space around homes and outbuildings
• Clearly mark property addresses and access roads
• Have multiple evacuation routes planned
• Register for emergency alerts and stay aware of burn restrictions
• Stage critical equipment before conditions deteriorate

Many people do not realize that ember showers can ignite structures far ahead of the main fire front. In rural communities, response times can also be longer due to terrain, distance, and simultaneous incidents during major fire events.

During active incidents, another challenge often emerges: protecting heavy equipment, water tenders, staging areas, evacuated neighborhoods, and restricted containment zones from interference, theft, trespassing, or unauthorized entry. Fire crews need to focus on fighting the fire, not managing perimeter problems.

That is why many agencies, contractors, and property owners increasingly utilize professional security support during wildfire operations for equipment staging security, road closures, evacuation area patrols, and containment perimeter control.

As we move deeper into summer, now is the time to prepare, not when smoke is already visible on the horizon. Eastern Washington has seen firsthand how quickly wind-driven fires can move through rural communities.
