Ancient arch bridges were made of stone, although today’s bridges are more likely to be made of steel and concrete. Arch bridges work by putting the material into compression (pushing its particles together). The compression forces in the arch then press against the ground.
Civil engineers are responsible for road and street construction, and the longest street in the world is almost 1,200 miles. It is Yonge (“young”) street and is located in Toronto, Canada. All or part of it has been in use since the 17th century.
One of the benefits to working with concrete when it comes to bridge construction is that it is a versatile and flexible material. This allows us to be creative, when designing the aesthetic elements of a bridge.
The skills of a civil engineer aren't just utilized in the public sector but in the private sector as well. Homeowners can call upon civil engineers to guide them through the construction of a new home or an addition to an existing home.
Bridges are an ancient form of engineering that goes back far longer than the Ancient Greeks. The Romans, however, were arguably the best. They engineered arch bridges and aqueducts that were stronger and more stable by using smarter designs and materials.
One reason asphalt is used on roads is because of its safety. Asphalt quickly disperses water from the road’s surface, reducing the amount of spray as drivers pass through, and also eliminates standing water from the surface.
Before developing a site, research needs to be conducted to determine whether the land is appropriate for the design plans. This process will look at topography, slope, drainage issues, and erosion control, among other things.
Every bridge builder has studied the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Why? Shortly after it opened in 1940, it was nicknamed “Galloping Gertie,” because wind and vehicle vibration made the narrow bridge ripple and sway. Within three months, the twisting and rolling forces destroyed the bridge.
In cement concrete paving for roads, it’s recommended that the concrete be broken up by regular joints, which are connected by wire baskets and dowels. This type of formation enables the concrete to expand and contract with seasonal temperature changes without any cracking on the road surface.
Proper drainage design is essential for any land development project. By incorporating correctly sized components and designing overflow capacity into your drainage system, you can save headaches and additional expenses down the road.
The first thing you think about when you hear "Alexandre Gustave Eiffel" is probably the Eiffel tower, or maybe the Statue of Liberty. But before he helped build those famous structures, Eiffel made a name for himself building steel bridges, and many of his ideas are still used today.
