My statement about yesterday.
For months, we’ve witnessed ICE terrorize communities. Yesterday, an ICE agent in Minneapolis killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by shooting her multiple times in the face. This is not an isolated incident or a tragic mistake; it is the predictable result of an agency that operates with impunity, violates the constitution, and treats human lives as expendable. Renee’s murder is a sobering reminder that unchecked federal force puts everyone’s safety and civil rights at risk, not just immigrant communities.
I fully support Representative Robin Kelly’s decision to file articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Leadership that enables or excuses brutality and constitutional violations must be held accountable. Congress must also immediately launch an independent investigation into ICE’s use of force, patterns of misconduct, and systemic civil rights violations.
Five years ago today, our Capitol was attacked and our country faced a crisis that reminded us how fragile our democracy is and how it is upheld by our public servants.
On the anniversary of insurrection day, it’s important to remember that we have the power to fight back against corruption. For our country to recover with the rule of law restored, we need legislators who know and understand federal laws and regulations to rebuild the government to protect all of us, including from abuses of law. As a civil rights attorney for 33 years, and having worked with the federal government for 13 years, I will bring the expertise and tenacity that is needed to make meaningful change in Congress.
Together, we can bring back a just and fair federal government that works for all of us and fosters a prosperous economy with sustainable jobs and wages, affordable housing, accessible health care, and secure civil rights. Let’s fight back– vote for Howard when the polls are open February 5th - March 17th!
